The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. Prior to 1981 the dept. maintained numerous vertical files that were created by various divisions within the dept. The subjects and content of these vertical files were determined by countless individuals employed by the dept. from ca. 1920 to 1981. This artifical series consists of the personal subject files maintained by Frances M. Hails from ca.1923 to ca.1955. This series consists of correspondence, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, brochures, and other material. A large portion of the files consists of transcripts of newspaper articles. The subjects include: agriculture, art, elections, the Confederate States of America, Ala. counties and towns, conventions, forts, institutions such as schools and hospitals, railroads and other means of transportation, women's styles, communication systems, theatre, prohibition, music, land, World War I and World War II. More than any other vertical file maintained by dept. staff, Hails' files reflect an awareness of women and women's issues. Included in her extensive files on organizations and associations are papers presented at the Women's Club. Hails also had an interest in inventions and maintained several files on this subject, particularly on John Pratt who invented the typewriter.
